New Student Registration for Summer Term Classes in Moultrie on May 20... New student registration for summer term classes in Moultrie from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be held at 4 p.m. on May 20 at ABAC on the Square in downtown Moultrie.
Summer term classes begin May 26 and end July 21. A total of 15 classes are available. The class schedule includes core curriculum classes in English, math, humanities, business, social science and physical education.
“Summer is a great time for a student to get a head start on the fall semester,” Kay Powell, Director of ABAC on the Square, said. “Picking up a class or two during the summer can make a real difference with a reduced load in the fall.”
Fall semester classes begin at ABAC on Aug. 18. An easy to follow application guide is available on-line at www.abac.edu/steps.
ABAC Financial Aid Director Jenelle Handcox said the financial aid deadline for the fall semester is July 15. Students can find out all the information they need to know about financial aid at the ABAC web site at www.abac.edu/fa.
Any questions on the ABAC on the Square classes for the summer or the fall can be directed to Powell at (229) 891-7235 or at kpowell@abac.edu.

Conner Resigns As ABAC Women's Basketball Coach... Julie Conner believes there’s no place like home.
Conner resigned her position Tuesday night as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to become the head girls’ basketball coach at her alma mater, Tift County High School.
Conner’s appointment as the head coach of the TCHS Lady Devils was approved in a meeting of the Tift County Board of Education on Tuesday afternoon. The position came open last month when Michelle Caldwell resigned to take a coaching position in the Atlanta area.
Conner resurrected the ABAC Fillies’ basketball program in 2000 after the college had dropped the sport 15 years earlier. In only her second year, Conner’s team won the 2002 state title with a 76-72 win over Atlanta Metro.
“I have had eight wonderful years at ABAC,” Conner said. “I have certainly enjoyed every season but the state title year really stands out.”
Conner was named the 2003 GJCAA Coach of the Year and the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Naismith Award winner for 2003. She has also served as the NJCAA women’s director for Region XVII for five years.
Record-wise, Conner had her best year with the 2005-2006 version of the Fillies, which rolled up a 24-9 record and lost in the state championship game to Georgia Perimeter. This year’s squad slipped to an 11-19 mark but Conner has already signed three players for next season with six other players scheduled to return.
A 1988 TCHS grad, Conner returns to a program where she was the assistant coach under John O’Brien in 1994-95. She was also the eighth grade girls’ coach that year for a team that wound up 14-0 and eventually had four players sign college scholarships.
Conner was the head girls’ coach at Mariner (Fla.) High School in 1995-96 and LaBelle (Fla.) High School in 1996-2000. By returning to TCHS, Conner follows a family tradition. Her dad, Johnny Rutland, was the head boys’ coach at TCHS from 1971-79.
“This is a schedule that fits my family situation better right now,” Conner said. “I will not be on the road recruiting. I need to spend as much time with my children as possible.”
Conner and her husband, Tom, have two children, Tye, 6, and Cali, 5.

Taylor Hand Named Donaldson Winner at ABAC Graduation...
A journalism major from Tifton captured the top graduate award at Friday’s spring graduation ceremony at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Taylor Hand, News Editor for the award-winning ABAC newspaper, was selected for the prestigious George P. Donaldson award.
The award included a plaque and a check for $500 from the ABAC Ag Alumni Council. The award is based on a combination of academics and extracurricular activities. The recipient must participate in the graduation ceremony. Donaldson served as president of ABAC from 1947 - 61.
United States Senator Saxby Chambliss was the guest speaker at the ceremony, which was held before a packed house crowd in Gressette Gymnasium. ABAC President David Bridges praised Chambliss for his words to the graduates and noted that the college aimed for a speaker of his caliber during the 100th birthday celebration of the college.
Hand, daughter of ABAC alumni Mark and Dawn Hand, adds the Donaldson award to an impressive array of ABAC accolades including her selection as Ms. Baldwin in a campuswide vote. She has also been named to Who’s Who at ABAC, Who’s Who Among American Junior Colleges, and an ABAC Pacesetter award winner.
Hand is a former vice-president of the ABAC Ambassadors, a member of the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, and the secretary for the Student Government Association. She also won the Humanities Division Discipline award in Journalism.
Hand, who plans to transfer to Georgia State University to continue her journalism studies, said ABAC had quite an impact on her life.
“Simply put, I will leave this place with more family/friends than I started with, more knowledge than I arrived with, and more incredible memories than I thought possible,” Hand said.
A total of 135 graduates received diplomas at the ceremony.
